A doula is a trained and experienced professional who provides physical, emotional, and informational support to the mother before, during, and just after birth. A doula does not replace the father, but instead, serves to encourage his support as an important part of the whole birthing team. Studies have shown that using a doula can shorten labor, decrease the use of pain medication, and decrease the need for a surgical birth. Overall, a doula enhances the satifaction of the mother's birth experience. Many women will include a doula in their birth plans even with a planned epidural because of the TLC they provide.
