Nurse Midwives are experts at the normal birthing
process. For more complicated pregnancies, Nurse Midwives manage the
pregnancy in conjunction with an obstetrician or perinatologist
(maternal-fetal specialist) who advise and consult about that woman's
care. In most cases Nurse Midwives can continue to manage the care of the
patient through the delivery of the baby. In rare instances, the
physician will need to care for the patient and the Nurse Midwife remains
involved in a supportive, nurturing role.
Midwife philosophy
Birth is one of the most exciting and truly awesome events in the life of a family. Midwives believe that birth is normal and natural. Our goal is a safe and satisfying birth; a healthy mother and a healthy baby. We also recognize that each woman is a unique person who will want her birth to be meaningful and special. We strive to make each birth personalized and meaningful to each woman.
There are many ways or styles to having a baby. Some women want to experience as little pain as possible. We can do that as long as it’s safe for the baby. Others want a holistic natural birth with a doula and a water birth and very little or no pain medication. We can do that too.
We respect a woman’s right to choose the style that fits her. We spend quite a bit of time at the prenatal visits educating our mothers so they can make wise decisions at each step of the way. We discuss the benefits and risks of the options they can choose from so the birth they dream about can be a reality. Safety concerns are the only limiting factors. The birth of a baby is a miracle. We consider it and honor and privilege to be in the presence of a miracle on a regular basis. |
